As a UI artist, one of the most exciting challenges is turning a functional layout into a visually engaging and intuitive experience. During this iteration of our in-game shop, I focused on refining the player upgrade and ability selection systems to enhance clarity, readability, and aesthetic cohesion. The initial shop UI had a strong foundation but lacked clear visual distinction between player data, upgrades, and abilities. My first step was to color-code each player’s section, giving them their own visual identity. This not only brought a vibrant, arcade-like energy to the UI but also helped players instantly locate their own selections.

Another part that I took a closer look at is one of the most interactive elements in any game interface - the powerups. While abilities and upgrades are the core of our gameplay progression, how they're presented could significantly affect a player’s interaction and satisfaction. In the creation of these assets, I explored various layouts such as circular icons which then evolved into rectangular labels with a gradient border. Doing this helped to find the best balance between clarity and personality. My goal was to communicate the action (bouncing bullets) instantly, even before players read the label. The icons went through many iterations (arrows versus lines) and were tested for readability while maintaining the colors that suit the chaos of Mega Dimension Ripper 9000. The evolution of the button is part of a larger philosophy, which is intuitive design that amplifies gameplay. Every icon, border, and colors are deliberate, turning player interaction into a satisfying micro-interaction.

With each pass, the shop UI evolves closer to a seamless blend of form and function. Stay tuned for more visual polishing in the next iteration!
